Tiia Vanhatapio receives the Golden Hanger Award 2009!

The winner of the Golden Hanger Award is selected by a jury consisting of respected Finnish fashion professionals. This year the jury was headed by Gloria magazine’s editor-in-chief, Riitta Lindegren.

The jury’s arguments for their decision are as follows: “Tiia Vanhatapio has brought forward her talent as a designer prominently and in a bold way. Her strong vision and the unique style of her designs have enabled her to create a recognisable brand image. Tiia Vanhatapio has also managed to make her products familiar to the general public, thus proving herself an exemplary fashion entrepreneur. She is a multitalented visionary – the kind the Finnish fashion industry has a dire need for.”

The Golden Hanger Award – presented annually since 1995 – is widely considered to be the most prestigious fashion award in Finland. The Golden Hanger Award was developed by the Finnish Fair Corporation in cooperation with Gloria Magazine, Stockmann department store and Fashion-Vateva.

The award can be given to a Finnish company or designer, whose collection or products meet the following requirements: up-to-date, high quality in design and materials, functionality, good price-quality ratio, exportable commerciality. Representing Finnish quality is also a key requisite.

The award will be presented to Miss Vanhatapio at the Muoti 2009 fashion fair on Friday, November 13th at Helsinki Exhibition Centre.

The eagerly anticipated launch of Tiia Vanhatapio’s AW 09/10 collection, Valkyria in Finland’s most prestigious department store, Stockmann, is taking place this very week.

Stockmann’s main location in the centre of Helsinki has renewed its women’s designer section, and Tiia Vanhatapio's collection can be found on the 3rd floor. Tiia will be signing off garments on Sat 29.8. and Sun 30.8. between 12-15 o'clock. Welcome!

Part of the Helsinki Design Week, Design Market is the biggest design outlet sale in Finland. The two-day event, taking place during the first weekend of September, gathers together dozens of vendors and thousands of shoppers in the spacious Merikaapeli hall of the Cable Factory in Ruoholahti.

The timeless Mamie series, which belong to the Vanhatapio Wax Cabinet classics collection, is available in stores from mid-September.

The furniture and interior design fair Habitare fills the Helsinki Fair Centre 9.-3.9.2009, during Helsinki Design Week.

Habitare’s Ahead! area features a Chair Bar, furnished with chairs customised by renowned designers from different fields of design. The chairs, donated by Helsinki Reuse Centre, have been given a new look and life at the hands of these professionals. The Chair Bar makes a statement about our environment: the definition of good design is investing in a safe, sustainable and better environment. The public are given the opportunity to vote for their favourite chair.

Tiia Vanhatapio declares smoking unfashionable – Skunk Girl collection delivers “stinking rebuttal” to nicotine

Designer Tiia Vanhatapio and Vero Moda are launching the anti-smoking Skunk Girl clothing line jointly with the Cancer Society of Finland. Vero Moda will market the collection exclusively.

"The Skunk Girl limited edition collection and the girl itself is a love child of director Tim Burton and the Eighties Madonna when she sang Holiday. Fresh, good-hearted and mischievous. Black ‘n white sailor, Forties cartoon pin-up," Tiia Vanhatapio crystallizes the soul of the collection.

“For decades the tobacco industry has positioned cigarettes in fashion catalogues to successfully create the false illusion of a connection between tobacco and glamour,” the Cancer Society of Finland’s Chief Medical officer Matti Rautalahti explains.

One of the main objectives of the joint product launch is to send the message to young women and girls that they don’t have to destroy their health and appearance to be fashionable. Tobacco causes visible adverse effects within a short time; everyone knows about the yellowing and greying of the skin, but recent studies show that nicotine addiction also causes midsection obesity in young women.

“Even widely admired female idols have spread misconceptions about smoking as a way to lose weight. In reality, all you get is a thicker midsection and bad breath,” Matti Rautalahti states.

Skunk Girl In Finland’s Next Top Model Program

The Skunk Girl collection will be available from nine Vero Moda shops beginning 28th of April 2009. The collection will also be featured extensively in Channel Four Finland’s Finland's Next Top Model program; the weekly tasks of the girls competing on the show will include posing in the fashion collection’s photo shoots and appearing in Channel Four Finland’s anti-smoking-themed “To be continued” on-screen identifiers.

“Personal care is part of every model’s professionalism. So tobacco doesn’t really belong in the toolbox,” says the program’s host, ex-model Anne Kukkohovi.
